Lillian Wald was born on March 10, 1867 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Max Wald and Minnie Schwarz. Her family had emigrated from Europe after 1848 to create a better life for themselves.
In 1878 the family moved to Rochester, New York, a place that she would eventually consider her hometown.
