Process Paper
How We Chose Our Topic:
My partner and I both agreed that we were interested in women’s and children’s rights, preferably a woman leader. We started by searching up leaders that met our parameters and consulting with our teacher. That’s when we came upon our topic, Lillian Wald. At first it seemed she was just a nurse, but with digging and more research we found out that not only did she coin the profession “public health nursing”, she also worked extensively for women’s, children’s, and immigrants’ rights.
How We Conducted Our Research:
We began with the basics, finding out whatever information we could find about her life online and in books. When we felt we felt we had a better understanding of who she was, we went on to specifics. We split up the research. One partner would research her background and the short-term legacy of her work. The other partner would research the conditions during the time period, Lillian Wald’s beliefs, and the long-term legacy of her work. We both decided to take leadership, because then we would both have a better understanding of her work. After a great amount of research, we conducted an email interview with Mr. David Garza, the executive director of the Henry Street Settlement, an organization created by Lillian Wald to help struggling New Yorkers.
How We Selected Our Presentation Category and Created the Project:
A year ago, I (Sirui) had created a website for the school. It was for an online high school course called Web Design. So coming in with previous knowledge on creating websites, and both agreeing that websites were a unique and creative way to create and present our information, we decided on website. We also realized that it would allow us to work on the website at the same time.
When creating the website, we first made an outline where we decided on our tabs and organized the information going under each tab. After all the information had been sorted, we decided on multimedia. We decided on where we were going to put pictures, videos, and music. We also looked at sample websites to come up with ideas for our own one. When that was all finished, we put our information in the Weebly website-builder.
We decided to create our pages one at a time, finish one page before going onto the next. This produced effective because we could split up the pages we each worked on.
How My Project Relates to the NHD Theme:
My project relates the the NHD Theme of Leadership and Legacy in History, because not only did Lillian Wald create an unheard of profession at the time, she campaigned for everyone’s rights. Lillian Wald realized some of the horrible conditions the poor in New York suffered, and went out, helped them, and then created an organization for helping them. She cared about women, children, and minorities, and she was never afraid to speak her mind and get them the rights they deserved.
